Teaching Through Coronavirus: What I learned – Week 2

In the face of  school closures and the COVID-19 pandemic, we all had to become remote teaching experts virtually overnight. And, even though most of us still feel overwhelmed, we are not helpless anymore. We are ready to embrace a new normal. So, what did I learn after another week of remote teaching?

Say NO to pyjamas!!!

In this challenging and unsettling time, it is the routine that gives students, age regardless, sense of stability and organisation. So, although initially, seeing some of my students in their pyjamas seemed funny, actually, it WAS NOT. It might be a good idea to lay clear rules to follow during the period of remote learning. See the example on the right I prepared with my students in easel.ly. Other examples of programs for visuals below.

Monitor Screen Time

Monitor time spent in front of the screen. Yours and your students’. The simplest way to do is is by installing an extension. My favourite is “Timer” offered by Kuba Szulaczkowski. Another very useful extension is an online alarm clock with a wonderful selection of tunes.

Keep Fit

As we all know, any prolonged sitting, at the desk or on the sofa, is not healthy. Lock-down we are currently experiencing in Scotland and other countries around the world is resulting in no or very limited physical activities. It is vital for us and our students to try to keep fit in this challenging period. I try to take a break very 30 minutes (using my timers mentioned above). One of the task I gave my students was to come up with a nice exercise we could do together online as a class. But, there are tonnes of fantastic videos you can find online like a See the playlist below.

Desk exercises from Forbes

And, Desk Yoga from my yoga guru Adriene.
